The airport code matters as much as the city name. Kilimanjaro International and Arusha Airport serve different flights, while Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar and bush airstrips create very different handovers.

Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha Airport

Kilimanjaro International Airport, code JRO, is the main international gateway for northern safaris, Arusha and Kilimanjaro climbs. It sits outside both Arusha and Moshi, so a private road transfer is still required. Arrival night location should follow the next activity, not an assumption that the airport is inside town.

Arusha Airport handles many domestic and safari flights. Its code and terminal should not be confused with JRO. A cross-town or JRO connection needs traffic margin, and separate tickets may not protect a missed onward flight.

Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar

Julius Nyerere International Airport serves Dar es Salaam and many international and domestic routes. Terminals and check-in arrangements differ by service; confirm the current terminal with the airline and allow a private transfer between city hotel, terminal or southern-circuit departure.

Zanzibar Airport connects the island with mainland Tanzania and international routes. Coast transfers can be long, particularly to the north or southeast. A late arrival is not a good foundation for an early boat trip.

Bush airstrips and light aircraft

Serengeti, Nyerere, Ruaha and other wildlife areas use small airstrips. Scheduled services may stop several times, and animals or weather can affect ground operation. Camp vehicles meet confirmed flights, but whether onward game drives are private or shared must be stated.

Soft-bag weight and dimension limits can be much stricter than international allowances. Confirm the operating airline's current rule and arrange storage before travel. Batteries and valuables must follow aviation rules.

Create a safe connection plan

Send Big 7 the full airline, flight number, date and airport code, then report schedule changes. Keep immigration, baggage collection and terminal transfer in the timing. Avoid non-refundable tight connections built from separate tickets.

Official airport and airline information can change. Check the Tanzania Airports Authority and the operating airline close to departure, then use the confirmed itinerary for your driver meeting point.

Use codes in every transfer message

Write JRO, ARK, DAR or ZNZ beside the flight number. “Arusha airport” is easily misunderstood when an international arrival actually lands at Kilimanjaro International.

Frequently asked questions

Are JRO and Arusha Airport the same? +

No. They are separate airports with a road transfer between them.

How early should I arrive? +

Follow the operating airline and current airport guidance; domestic, international and bush services differ.

Can a safari start straight from an international flight? +

Sometimes, but an arrival night often protects against delay and fatigue. Route and landing time decide.

Turn the guide into a workable itinerary

Use Tanzania Airports Guide to ask better questions, then match the advice to your dates, party, pace and accommodation preferences. Big 7 can explain the route, current availability, private and shared services, transfers, inclusions and the assumptions behind a quotation before you decide.

Match the airport to the route

The most convenient international arrival is the one that supports the first confirmed service, not simply the airport with the cheapest fare. Northern safaris and Kilimanjaro usually connect logically with Kilimanjaro International Airport, while Zanzibar combinations may use a domestic flight between the island and Arusha-area or safari airstrips. Southern circuits often depend on connections through Dar es Salaam. Exact schedules and baggage rules must be checked for the travel date.

Build buffers where separate tickets, immigration, baggage collection or a change between airports creates risk. Light aircraft may have stricter weight and bag-shape limits than the long-haul carrier, and excess capacity cannot be assumed. Soft-sided luggage is often easier to accommodate, but travelers should use the written allowance from the operating airline rather than a general blog rule.

Arrival details to confirm in writing

  • Flight number, operating airline, terminal and scheduled arrival time.
  • Meeting point and the name or phone number used by the transfer team.
  • Domestic connection time, baggage allowance and any same-day cutoff.
  • Hotel address and an emergency contact available if a flight changes.
  • Whether the first night allows realistic recovery after the journey.

Share schedule changes promptly with Big 7 and continue with the flying versus driving guide before fixing the internal route.
