Overview

Southern Tanzania’s Hidden Safari Gem

Tucked between the Uluguru Mountains and the Lumango range, Mikumi National Park is often described as a smaller, quieter version of the Serengeti—and that’s not a bad thing. Located just a 4–5 hour drive from Dar es Salaam, it’s one of the most accessible parks in southern Tanzania, making it ideal for short safaris or a quick escape into the wild.

Despite being lesser known, Mikumi is Tanzania’s fourth largest national park, covering over 3,200 square kilometers. It shares an ecosystem with the much larger Selous Game Reserve (now part of Nyerere National Park), so wildlife sightings are diverse and rewarding—without the tourist crowds you might find in the north.

Wildlife & Activities

The wide, open Mkata floodplain is the park’s centerpiece and a wildlife magnet. Here, you can spot elephants, buffaloes, wildebeests, zebras, giraffes, and lions lounging in the sun. Lucky visitors may also encounter leopards, hippos, and African wild dogs. And if you’re a bird lover, you’ll find over 400 recorded bird species, from colorful bee-eaters to giant ground hornbills.

Activities in Mikumi are all about classic safari experiences:

  • Game drives (morning, afternoon, or full-day)

  • Walking safaris with armed rangers (in nearby areas)

  • Birdwatching

  • Cultural visits to nearby Maasai or local villages

It’s a great choice for first-timers and those wanting a laid-back safari without compromising on sightings.

Unique Features

What sets Mikumi apart is its combination of accessibility and authenticity. You won’t find fancy luxury lodges here—yet—but what you do get is real wilderness, friendly guides, and excellent value for money.

The Baobab-dotted landscape, golden savannah, and the backdrop of distant mountains create a dreamy, postcard-perfect safari setting. Plus, since it’s less crowded, your wildlife moments feel more personal and immersive.

Mikumi is also a perfect stopover if you’re heading to Ruaha or Nyerere National Park—great for building a southern circuit itinerary.

📅 When to Visit

Mikumi is a year-round destination, but here’s how the seasons play out:

  • June to October (Dry Season): Best time for wildlife. Animals gather around water sources and visibility is excellent. Cooler weather, minimal rain.

  • November to May (Green Season): The landscape turns lush and green, with plenty of young animals and migratory birds. Afternoon showers are common, but it’s still good for game drives.

  • March to May (Long rains): Fewer tourists and greener scenery, but some roads can get muddy.

If you’re looking for balance, June to February is ideal.
