Overview

A Small Park Full of Surprises

Lake Manyara National Park is one of the smaller parks on the Northern Safari Circuit, but don’t let its size fool you—this place packs a punch. Located just 90 minutes from Arusha, and often used as a stopover en route to the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, Lake Manyara offers a lush, jungle-like vibe that feels totally different from the wide-open plains of its neighbors.

The park stretches along the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, with its alkaline lake making up nearly two-thirds of the park’s area. It’s famous for its tree-climbing lions, dramatic scenery, and a strong variety of birdlife and habitats, all crammed into a compact, easy-to-explore space.

Wildlife & Activities

Lake Manyara might be small, but the wildlife here is wonderfully diverse. Picture elephants slowly moving through the groundwater forest, troops of baboons—some of the largest in Africa—filling the roads, and if you’re lucky, you might catch the park’s famous lions lounging in trees.

The park is also a birdwatcher’s dream. With over 400 bird species, including flamingos, pelicans, and storks, it’s a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.

Popular activities include:

  • 🚗 Game drives (perfect for half or full-day safaris)

  • 🥾 Canoeing (when water levels allow)

  • 🚲 Mountain biking and nature walks just outside the park

  • 🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Cultural tours in nearby Mto wa Mbu village

Unique Features

What sets Lake Manyara apart is how much it offers in such a small area. You can experience lush rainforest, open grassy floodplains, acacia woodlands, hot springs, and the iconic soda lake—all within a couple of hours. The setting beneath the towering Rift Valley wall adds cinematic drama to every turn.

This park is also one of the best places to see primates—especially baboons and blue monkeys. And if you’re traveling with kids or first-time safari-goers, Manyara is a great soft introduction to Tanzania’s wildlife.

📅 When to Visit

Lake Manyara is a great year-round destination, though different seasons offer different vibes:

  • June to October (Dry Season): Best for game viewing. Animals gather around water sources and roads are easier to access.

  • November to May (Green Season): Lush landscapes, tons of birds (especially flamingos), and fewer tourists. Great for photography.

  • March & April: Rainy season. Fewer crowds, but the roads can get muddy—4×4 required!
